interview with
David Gardner
Engerica

What has been the worst gig you have played?
The most recent shocker was Doncaster. We played to 7 people and we had to support this guy called Adam Bomb, an ancient and deluded man who thought he was playing Wembley. It was pathetic.

What gave you the inspiration for the song 'The Smell'?
I don’t know that I was inspired to write it really, I just had 50 riffs that I wasn't sure what to do with, so I made them into a song so I could move on. which I think is what it kind of sounds like now. a bunch of riffs I wanted to get shot of.

What reaction was you expecting from the audience at the 'Wednesday 13's
Grave Yard A Go Go Tour'?
I was unsure cos I didn’t know what his stuff was like really. We knew we can be heavy and have spooky bits to our songs but we also knew we were very different to the Murderdolls. But for the most part the tour went well for us. aside from Manchester but I think the crowd were just pissed off cos they'd been made to wait and they knew it was our fault. We were late.

What are you hoping to achieve while being in Engerica?
Just to hopefully make someone else think they same as I did the first time I heard a nirvana record, as lame as that sounds. Music was and is a massive deal to me and I wouldn't want to imagine my life without it and I want to make someone else feel the same way as I do about it.

Who has been your inspiration while growing up?
I'm not saying this to sound cool and nihilistic but I wouldn’t say anyone has inspired me. I suppose not wanting to spend my whole life in a job I couldn’t give 2 fucks about is my inspiration.

Random question, if you could be a cartoon character, who would you be and why? Myself I would be sponge bob square pants!
There was a cartoon called Heathcliff and within that there was a cartoon about a group of cats and the head cat, I forget his name, had this hot girlfriend cat called Cleo so I guess I'd wanna be him. That’s not to say I condone bestiality. I'd be a cat as well so technically it'd all be kosher, plus she was a cartoon.

If you could rule the world what would you ban, and what would you make legal?
I wouldn't ban or legalise anything, people should be responsible for their own choices. It's tempting to dictate but it'd be better to just educate individuals so that they can make informed choices.

Are you planning to headline a tour in the future?
We headlined our own tour at the start of the year and now we're taking a break from all touring. We've nothing planned but we will tour again this year but we don’t know when and whether it'll be on our own or with another band.

How old was you when you realised what you wanted to do was be in a band?
I'd say 12 or 13 was when I knew. I'd always been a show off but that’s when I realised music was what I wanted to do.

Anything you'd like to say? cheers
Thank you
