If you had to change something about how you are now, what would it be? It would cool if we had a little bit more money so this could be pour only job. We tour for between 3-6 weeks several times over the year and all the time we're not touring we have crappy jobs so we can afford to go back out on the road. That's probably the only thing that I would change, it would be nice
Where is your favourite place to play a gig? Either in Worcester or Peterborough. The Worcester venue keeps changing but it's run by the guys who own Lockjaw Records and are in Tribute to Nothing, they're awesome guys and there are always people there to have a good time and the same faces keep turning up so we must be doing something right. It's pretty similar in Peterborough, we've played a venue called the Park 5 times in the last year and it's always a good turn out, the first time we ever played there it was sold out and we always get a really great reaction whenever we go back the people are really cool.
Have you had a memorable moment on tour yet? Probably the best thing that happened on tour was when we played a venue called Blue and Gold in King's Lynn which is a place you don't tend to associate with rock shows. It was our second visit and the promoter came up to us quietly and whispered that the place was 70 over capacity and it was a pretty big venue anyway, it was a really cool feeling and the place went off when we played
Do you enjoy the attention you get from fans, or do you sometimes wish they'd leave you alone? It's kind of sad no one ever really bothers us, we just stand by the merch hanging out and spend most of the time on our own. We like people coming to talk to us it makes us feel wanted! (aaaah)
Do you think it is weird how you see your self in magazines and being mentioned on the radio, etc…? Yeah it's really weird, we're still kind of getting to grips with the whole thing it always leaves a really odd feeling in my stomach. It's always good though it means more people can hear the band and hopefully that will mean there will be more people at the shows and we can have an even better time.
Who was your inspiration when growing up and have you always been into this kind of music? When I was younger I always like metal, it wasn't until I joined Not Katies that I really got into any kind of punk music. I'm completely down with it now and especially as the musical genres are crossing over I can get the best of both worlds!
Whatever happened to the paper to join Not Katies email list with that picture on I think you drew? from rock city last year... ? I imagine it's amongst loads of old Not Katies memorabilia that we have we tend to keep as much weird and cool stuff as possible but I'm not sure.
How did you and the others form the band? The band was kind of Luke's idea, he already knew Ewan from being in bands with him back in their home town and then Dave was introduced cos Luke knew he was a good guitarist and then I was added cos no one else wanted to sing and it all kind of grew from there
Do you think you've become more wiser while being in Not Katies? I'd say I've definitely become a bit more cynical, I'm not sure whether cynicism brings wisdom but I'm a lot more wary of people who are interested in the band always wondering what they can get out of us, it's a bit savage really. I definitely am a lot wiser when it comes to travelling around the UK, I'm almost like a human map - I think since we started we have clocked up around 30,000 miles so I should be getting good by now.
Was it hard getting to were you are now? It's been pretty tough but I can't put it all down to us, we've had help from some good shows and some TV exposure but we've done a lot of touring and we're always on the computers and sneaking into the university pretending we're students trying to work stuff out - we definitely work pretty hard.
If you weren't in Not Katies, what would you be doing now? I'd like to say I was doing some other musical project but I'd probably go back to film making which was what I really wanted to from when I was young. But if I can keep this going and make some sort of success out of the band that would be incredible.
What band would you really want to play a gig with? I'd love to play a show with the Movielife again, they were awesome and a really big influence on us as a band and then play with someone like Kiss or Bon Jovi so we could do a stadium show!
Anything you have to say Rich? cheers. Come check us out, and the check out the new EP it's really good (honest). Thanks.
