Interview With
Travis Miguel
ATREYU

You've become quite a well known band over the year, did you expect any of this when you first started out?
We definitely didn't expect any of this. Our original plan was to sign with whoever would take us, record an album, do a few shitty van tours here and there, and then go back to work or school. We never thought in a million years that we'd get as far as we have.

Your lyrics are quite personal are there any you regret writing?
Alex definitely puts a lot of time and thought into his lyrics. I don't think he regrets writing any of them. Some songs have straight forward lyrics and others have lyrics that are a bit more open to interpretation.

Do you find it easy to write a song or do you have to be in a certain mood? How long does it usually take you?
We take forever to write. I guess we're just slow. The writing process usually starts with our other guitar player, Dan and/or our drummer Brandon. They come up with the main foundation of the song and then I put my touch on it and then we hammer it out until it becomes a solified song. We don't really have to be in a certain mood to write. Some of the stuff we've written happened by accident.

Your music has progressed since you started, is 'The Curse' your best album?
I wouldn't call it the "best". Calling it the best would be like choosing a favorite child. Musically, it's just where we're at right now.

Are you hoping to do a headline tour in the UK anytime?
I believe we're doing a tour with Every Time I Die in the UK in December. We're definitely excited for that.

Who would you love to tour with?
The Deftones have always been a favorite band of mine, so it'd be a dream come true to play with them. There's a band out of Sacramento called Ghostride who are awesome as well.

On the Metalfest DVD during the song Lip gloss and black you do a synchronised guitar routine..... how did you come up with it and how long does it take you to practice it? HeHe!
It's just fun to be silly on stage.

What your fantasy gig line-up be if you could play with anyone living or dead?
Led Zepplen, original Misfits line-up, Black Flag, and Metallica with Cliff Burton.

What is in your CD player at the moment?
I'm currently listening to Mastadon - Leviathan

What bands influenced you the most while growing up?
I listened to a lot of punk, metal, and hardcore growing up. Everything from the Misfits to Sepultura to Snapcase to Far....I could go on forever.

Your current release is The Curse. What's the worst thing thats happened to you on tour?
Being sick and having a 102 temperature on tour really sucked. We didn't have a trailer or air conditioning at the time and it was in the middle of the summer. I wanted someone to put me out of my misery.

What are Atreyu's plans for the future?
We'll be doing a US tour with the Used in Oct. and we'll be heading out with Taking Back Sunday in Nov. After that we'll be making our way out to the UK for about a week's worth of shows.

Anything you'd like to say or even ask us? Cheers!
Thanx!
