VOL.3: THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES

****

After much doubt and speculation the nine piece return after a two year wait with their third album, ‘Vol.3: The Subliminal Verses’.
The album kicks off with the track ‘Prelude 3.0’ which works well as an introduction. The next two songs ‘Blister Ends’ and ‘Three Nil’ seem to be more of a build up to the rest of the album and return more to Slipknot’s roots. It is only when ‘Duality’ kicks in that you get a real sense of what this album is about. The following song ‘Opium Of People’ carries on where ‘Duality’ left off.

Slipknot’s new style is shown rather plainly in the song ‘Circle’ which is the kind of song which will have you checking whether you are listening to the right CD. This is one of two songs with slow vocals and acoustic guitars. ‘Welcome’ sounds similar to ‘Pulse Of The Maggots’ but adds more of an advantage than disadvantage. It is a welcome return to the kind of slipknot songs people were expecting.
Corey Taylor’s time away in Stone Sour is apparent in songs like ‘Vermillion’ and is a good example of how good Slipknot’s new style can be.
‘Pulse Of The Maggots’ is without a doubt one of the best songs on the album and is the kind of song which will please all listeners. ‘Before I Forget’ is another song which sticks out on the album like ‘Welcome‘, ‘Pulse Of The Maggots’ and ‘Duality’.
‘Vermillion Part 2’ is ‘Vermillion’ in acoustic and sometimes they have to be careful of not sounding like a boy band, but otherwise it is still a great song. ‘The Nameless’ is a good song but let down by moments where boy band style parts kick in. Definitely not what fans would want from Slipknot. ‘The Virus Of Life’ is a strange but cool song with an old horror movie kind of sound. This song is a hidden gem on the album and worth checking out. ‘Danger-Keep Away’ is a slow finish to the album which will disappoint.
The album is one that is a great album in it’s own way but there isn’t much to compare to as it is different to all other Slipknot outings but it is one that will disappoint lots and will entertain others. The only question is which one will you be?
